Prof. David Nott

OBE, DSc, MD, FRCS

Professor David Nott is a Consultant Vascular and Trauma Surgeon at St. Mary’s Hospital in London and also performs life-changing cancer surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital. He was the first surgeon in the world to perform a totally laparoscopic distal arterial bypass. Professor Nott has spent the last 30 years volunteering as a trauma surgeon in conflict and catastrophe zones including Bosnia, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Chad, Darfur, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Iraq, Pakistan, Libya, Syria, Central African Republic, Palestine, Nepal and Ukraine. He has volunteered for numerous aid organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Syria Relief alongside raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. Professor Nott is also a keen educator and has established the Surgical Training for the Austere Environment (STAE) course at the Royal College of Surgeons in the UK and the Hostile Environment Surgical Training (HEST) course abroad in order to equip surgeons with skills needed for emergency trauma surgery. Professor Nott founded the David Nott Foundation in 2015 in order to support the training of surgeons for operating in war zones and austere environments through the HEST course. Professor Nott is also author of the best selling memoir, War Doctor.
