Chest Trauma and Drain Insertion

Wet workshop: This workshop requires PPE

Chest trauma is one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma patients. This workshop provides an in-depth look at the assessment and management of thoracic injuries, supported by practical training in life-saving procedures. Delegates will gain both knowledge and technical skill in managing some of the most critical emergencies in trauma care.

  • Learn the indications for needle thoracocentesis, chest tube insertion, and pericardiocentesis.

  • Be able to describe the clinical features distinguishing pneumothorax, tension pneumothorax, cardiac tamponade, massive haemothorax, open pneumothorax, and flail chest.

  • Understand the underlying pathology of tension pneumothorax and cardiac tamponade.

  • Recognise the importance of good venous access before attempting procedures.

  • Practise performing needle thoracocentesis and chest drain insertion, including identifying possible complications.
